The Ohio Department of Transportation (“ODOT”) recently released a report detailing the 150 most dangerous intersections throughout the State of Ohio. Of those 150 – more than a dozen were located right here in Toledo, Ohio. As Car Accident Attorneys, we know the devastation that car related injuries can cause. So let’s take a moment to review the intersections that require the most caution.
According to an ODOT analysis, drivers following too closely to the vehicle in front of them was the most common reason for collisions at 14 of the 16 “priority” intersections in metro Toledo. The other two, at Central Avenue and Reynolds Road and on Detroit Avenue at the Cherry/Berdan roundabout, had failure to yield as the most common “contributing factor.”

What Makes an Intersection Dangerous?
The ODOT analysis said the Detroit roundabout had above-average crashes “related to vehicles passing each other and angle crashes,” while Airport/Byrne had particular problems with angle collisions and nighttime crashes. Some of the intersections however, may already have received safety-related improvements in recent years – so many of the issues may have been addressed.
More than half of the 16 metro Toledo intersections on the list, for example, have undergone some form of construction within the past few years to change their layout, relieve congestion, or both.

Some of the intersections however, may already have received safety-related improvements in recent years, which the list — which ODOT spokesman Matt Bruning conceded was hastily assembled from the department’s databases — doesn’t acknowledge.

Gov. DeWine directed ODOT circulate a list of 150 dangerous intersections in Ohio, including more than a dozen in Toledo. While it’s difficult to explain exactly what the reason is for the increased prevalence of car accidents at these locations – it’s important to be aware of these locations and to excercise added caution and safety when approached and traveling through these locations around Toledo.
